10 UK Transport Eco Facts

Fuel consumption, road congestion and emissions are all significant environmental factors. Transport, expecially road transport, is recognised as one of the greatest sources of CO2 emissions. Here are just 10 interesting statistics relating to UK road transport, fuel consumption and those pesky emissions:

  1. An area the size of Leicestershire is now taken up by roads, with a fifth as much land given over to parking. Source: DfT
  2. If all the cars in Britain in 98/99 were lined up head to tail they would go twice round the world. Source: National Travel Survey 98/00
  3. Road traffic grew by 73 per cent between 1980 and 2002. Source: DfT Transport Trends 02
  4. Road traffic in Britain is forecast to increase by up to 48 per cent by 2026. Source: DETR
  5. Over the last 10 years the number of licensed vehicles has increased by 23.3%. Source: DfT
  6. Traffic congestion is projected to grow by 65 per cent overall by 2010. Source: Commission for integrated Transport
  7. The average CO2 emissions from all licensed vehicles in 2007 was 171.1 g/km which is a reduction of 4% from 177.8 g/km in 2001. Source: DfT.
  8. The health impacts of traffic pollution cost the UK £11.1bn each year. Source: Environmental Transport Association
  9. Emissions from ‘freight transport by road’ have increased by 38% between 1990 and 2005 whereas emissions from buses fell by 15% over the same period. Source: DfT.
  10. Between 1997 and 2007 fuel consumption of new petrol cars improved from 8.28 to 7.34 litres per 100 km and diesel cars improved from 7.1 to 6.32 litres. Source: DfT.

Here’s another fact: there are 26% fewer birds in our gardens than there were in 1979, when the first RSPB Big Bird Watch was carried out (results published last week). One of the contributing factors? Pollution.

We really are digging ourselves into a massive hole. As the Chinese say, we live in ‘interesting’ times!
