Boat Owners Paying Full Tax For Biodiesel

Despite information information released with the budget suggesting that boat biofuel would be liable for a tax of only 9.69p per litre motor boat owners are actually required to pay the full duty of 30.35p per litre. This is set to rise by 20p per litre in April 2010.

The confusion has arisen due to a document in which the term ‘non-road-use’ is used. It turns out that this term was not intended to include boats!

Low duty biodiesel is reseved for vehicles like tractors, emergency vehicles, cranes and the like. It is not intended for use in pleasure craft.

Owners of motor boats, RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) and speedboats have some time to wait before suitable ‘future fuels’ will become available.
