Honda begins production of first commercial hydrogen car
Honda has started the production of the first commercial hydrogen fuel cell-powered car.
On Sunday 15th of June 2008 in Tochigi, Japan, Honda announced the release, and their first customers.
The four door car, named as the FCX Clarity, is powered by a hydrogen fuelled battery that produces electricity, because of this, the car’s only by-product is steam.
According to Honda the car can do about 72 miles per kilo of H2, which apparently is equal to about 74 mpg on a petrol powered car.
The car itself can drive for around 280 miles before needing a refuel.
According to hydrogencarsnow.com, the car is being released for lease to a select list of customers, no surprises that the list contains several celebrities like Jamie Lee Curtis, sharing with husband Christopher Guest, Laura Harris, Ron Yerxa, entrepreneur Jim Salomon and businessman Jon Spallino. The car is being set for release in summer 2008 for $600 per month for 3 years, Honda will be paying for any maintenance and collision insurance, however, the customers have to pay for the hydrogen gas.
So keep your eyes peeled for when this car is released to the UK for lease, exciting times for eco cars.
