Brazil is one of the main destinations in South America for those that love surfing and many individuals flock to the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. There are also many different spots around Rio de Janeiro that are proving to be popular with the surfing crowd. Many head to Brazil between April and October to be sure of the best waves. This is also a good place for surfers to show off their latest gear. Surfing items from brands such as Billabong, Animal clothing and Roxy are the norm in these destinations. The Billabong Intervention Board Shorts are one of the most popular items in the range.
Chile is not the most obvious place that springs to mind when thinking of surfing, but there are some good beaches on the north coast near Arica, although wearing a wetsuit is recommended at some of the locations. Peru is another up and coming spot for surfers. Lima has a number of good beaches and there are several which are ideal for beginners. The beach at Mancora is one of the main options for surfers and is close to the border with Ecuador.
The surfing season in Ecuador runs from November to April and many points on the Salinas peninsula are ideal for surfing enthusiasts. Some surfers even venture out to the Galapagos Islands to take advantage of the good waves, particularly at Isla San Cristobal.
